Chief Probation Officer, Yuma County Adult Probation
Mike Byrd earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Northern Arizona University in 2000 and began working for Yuma County Adult Probation in 2001 as a probation officer. As a probation officer, he has been assigned to caseloads of supervised probation, intensive probation, and interstate compact. From 2006 to 2016 Mike worked in the Yuma County Adult Drug Court, first as an intensive probation officer and his last four years as the Drug Court Coordinator. During this time, he joined the Arizona Association of Drug Court Professionals (AADCP) as a conference committee member and participated annually in the state conference in a committee member role, as a facilitator, and as a participant. In 2015, Mike was chosen as the Yuma County Employee of the Year. He was a member of the Arizona Adult Drug Court Best Practice Standards work group which developed and submitted standards to the state judiciary for review. In 2018, Mike received the AADCP Excellence Award and completed the American Probation and Parole Association Leadership Institute. In 2016, Mike was promoted to Deputy Chief and Interim Chief in 2019. In 2020 Mike became the Chief of Yuma County Adult Probation and is currently working towards a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. Mike was born and raised in Yuma, and is married to Johnna Byrd, a juvenile probation officer for the Yuma County Juvenile Drug Court.
Mike is a champion of treatment courts, not only locally, but statewide.
